Product Description: Through a verse-by-verse analysis of these three epistles, Dr. Akin (Dean of the School of Theology, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) examines the person and work of Christ, the avenues of assurance in salvation, and the ever present danger of false teaching to the Christian community. What we believe and how we live are carefully explored and shown to be essential to a vibrant Christian life. Although the second and third letters have been somewhat neglected, the first letter has proved to be a perennial favorite of the Church throughout its history. Through careful exegesis, Dr. Akin shows all three epistles of John to be both simple and profound while offering a message for the Church in any generation.

Product Description: New Expanded Edition of When God Says No With Discussion Questions for Group Use We love it when God answers prayer. He thunders from heaven to answer Elijah, sending fire to ignite wet wood. He provides food and work, heals the sick, reassembles broken marriages, brings wayward children home. We wouldn't bother to ask God's help if we didn't want his resounding "Yes!" to our prayers. When our prayers are good and reasonable, we see no reason why a good and powerful God wouldn't grant what we ask. But even to the greatest saints God sometimes says no. The "company of the denied" includes David, Paul, even Jesus. Is it possible to make sense of unanswered prayer? With wisdom and warmth, Leith Anderson probes prayer's toughest mysteries, leading readers anew to the God who is worth trusting. Leith Anderson is senior pastor of Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. He has shepherded thousands of people through both elation and despair and is one of America's best known pastors.

An Earth Angel is the family member whom you've known your whole life, or the stranger who sits next to you on a bus bench for only a few minutes. Every day you are surrounded by Earth Angels--by ordinary people who have earned their wings. If you choose to open your eyes, you will see them everywhere. We invite you to look at your world in a different way, and perhaps reflected in the eyes of your Earth Angels, you'll see colors you've never seen before." --from the Introduction From the Hardcover edition. From AudioFile Corrie ten Boom was a leader in the Dutch Underground during WWII. With the aid of her family, she hid scores of Jews from the Nazi invaders. She was arrested along with every member of her family, spending the remaining war years in concentration camps. Nadia May does great credit to the writers of this true story. She reads with simplicity and a lack of histrionics. Her emotional control makes the tension and horror of the family's plight more real and hideous. Her vocal range is expansive as is her ability to speak with diverse foreign accents. The listener is left with a story of extraordinary humanity, goodness and overwhelming love. J.P. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Product Description: The Hiding Place proves that the light of God's love can penetrate even the darkest recesses of despair, places like the Nazi extermination camp at Ravensbruck. After protecting Dutch Jews in a secret room in their home, Corrie ten Boom, her sister and father were discovered, arrested, and imprisoned. Only Corrie survived, but her faith in God remained strong-so strong that, after the war, she could forgive a former camp guard in a face-to-face meeting. More than just a spellbinding adventure, The Hiding Place is a life-changing story.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001 Jim Cymbala, pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, must be one fantastic sermon-giver. He's got it all: great storytelling skills, the willingness to be humble and vulnerable as he admits his owns frailties, an excellent command of Bible passages, and the ability to weave it all together into a spiritual shawl that warms the soul long after the words have ended. In Fresh Power, Cymbala once again draws upon his life and the lives of his church members to bring forth a new lesson. This time Cymbala speaks to how Christians can embrace the biblical meaning of "Holy Spirit" and follow the words of the scripture to revitalize their faith as well as their church. From Publishers Weekly This third book in Cymbala's bestselling trilogy (Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire and Fresh Faith) explores the third person in the Trinity: the Holy Spirit. Like its award-winning predecessors, it combines unforgettable anecdotes culled from Cymbala's ministry as pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle with deep theological and biblical truths, many of which are not easy to hear. It is clearly the edgiest, most cutting book of the series, with Cymbala's passionate voice urging Christians to abandon their comfort zones in favor of the unpredictable leadings of the Spirit. He criticizes churchgoers who neglect the power of the Spirit, chastising, for example, Christians who are so fixated on end-time prophecies that they neglect God's work in the here and now. His harshest words are reserved for the "the disastrous 'church-growth' movement," which, he says, has convinced Christians everywhere that worship must be entertaining and inoffensive. Cymbala utilizes the Book of Acts to explore the early Church's practice of complete dependence upon the Spirit, citing not just the famous Pentecost scene of Acts 2 but also many other examples of transformation throughout the book (particularly Peter's metamorphosis from a fair-weather friend of Jesus into a committed, Spirit-led apostle). Some readers may be made uneasy by Cymbala's hard-hitting, take-no-prisoners approach, but others will cheer his prophetic call to reformationDand, more importantly, be changed by it. (Feb.) ABOUT THE BOOK Hosea, Joel: New American Commentary, Vol. 19 FROM THE PUBLISHER The implement employed in these two prophets to capture the attention and hearts of God's people is the symbol. In Joel it is the locust, a symbol of impending destruction. In Hosea the prophet himself--and his scorned but constant love--dramatically portrays God's message of grace and his call to repent. With his customary exegetical skill and theological insight, Duane Garrett guides us through these striking works of prophetic literature.

From Publishers Weekly This sequel to Joshua , an inspirational paperback bestseller, continues Father Girzone's recasting of Jesus's mission in contemporary settings. Joshua, an unusual and attractive young man, comes to a village rent by partisan strife (e.g. Catholic vs. Protestant; guerrillas and political agitators) and immediately captures the hearts of the children, enchanting them with gentle stories and amusing sleight-of-hand until they carry his message to the adults. Entering villagers' homes, Joshua eats and drinks at family meals, casts out fear, heals divisions on many levels. His legacy, following his death at the hands of violent men, flourishes in the children "who almost overnight came to dominate the political life of the country." Since the story is a parable set in a place that could represent Northern Ireland or any other faction-ridden community, the applications of the message are broad. The simple, childlike tone and the inspirational subtext will appeal to the audience that enjoyed Joshua . Girzone is a retired Catholic priest of the Albany, N.Y., diocese. 150,000 first printing. Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc. Product Description: The Story Continues... Joseph F. Girzone has woven another magical story, a modern-day parable, in Joshua and the Children, which gracefully continues the teachings and inspirations from his previous bestseller, Joshua. A stronger Joshua arrives in a deceptively ordinary village only to witness the doings of unscrupulous leaders and violent people. The children are the first to recognize that something is quite different about this stranger who has come seemingly from nowhere. It is through the villagers' children that Joshua is able to restore a sense of peacefulness and honesty. "A new day had dawned, a new spirit spread throughout the land, and it all seemed to have happened because of the simple, unassuming goodness of one gentle stranger who knew only how to love."--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Amazon.com Angels: God's Secret Agents is Billy Graham's one-volume introduction to one of the most popular spiritual phenomena of our time. Firmly grounded in Graham's close readings of scripture, Angels testifies to Graham's own encounters with the heavenly beings and also records the many similar stories that other believers have told him over the years. Graham devotes entire chapters to the questions of whether angels are visible or invisible, how they differ from men and women, and how the angelic hierarchy is organized. He also discusses the much-debated theory that UFO sightings are in fact angelic appearances. Perhaps the primary purpose of this book, however, is to inform readers that armies of angels are ready and willing to help Christians in their daily fights against the forces of darkness. "Millions of angels are at God's command and at our service," Graham writes. "The hosts of heaven stand at attention as we make our way from earth to glory, and Satan's BB guns are no match for God's heavy artillery." Such stirring theological pronouncements are matched with practical advice for believers who wish to know the angelic powers in everyday life. --Kevin Attwood --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Amazon.com "What is the difference between the paraplegic woman with the smile that lights a room and the millionaire with a suicide wish?" asks Billy Graham. "Or what makes one person accept and keep his balance during a painful time, and another become a self-pitying whiner?" Hope for the Troubled Heart: Finding God in the Midst of Pain is Graham's attempt to answer these questions and the larger question that underlies them: why, in a world full of pain, should people hope and not despair? Perhaps the most powerful thing about this book is the sheer number of its heartbreaking stories about people suffering from abuse, loneliness, sickness, emptiness, financial ruin, and other calamities. Nearly every reader will find something to relate to. Graham's stories do not stop at desolation, however. They press further, to show how suffering people find solace in the Bible, in the love of other believers, and in the hope of heaven. What Graham offers in this book is a reason to be patient, a reason to believe that the forces of destruction need not have the last word in human life. "A few more days may dawn and darken and we will know the unending day," he writes. "A few brief years, or brief moments, and we shall enter that eternal city, sit in the shadow of the Tree of Life, and drink the crystal clear water. We have only had a foretaste on earth of what it means to love and be loved." That, in the end, is the greatest reason for hope that Graham offers. --Kevin Attwood --This text refers to the Paperback edition. Product Description: What hopeless situation troubles your heart? The death of a loved one? The memories of childhood abuse? The diagnosis of terminal illness? The strain of financial failure? A stormy marriage? A body wracked by pain? A lonely sense of emptiness? Into your hopeless situation comes beloved evangelist Billy Graham bearing God's gift of hope, one of the strongest "medicines" known to humanity, an amazing resource that "can cure nearly everything." Filled with unforgettable stories of real-life people and irrefutable lessons of biblical wisdom, Hope for the Troubled Heart inspires and encourages you with God's healing and strengthening truths. It shows you how to cope when your heart is breaking, how to pray through your pain, how to avoid the dark pit of resentment and bitterness, and how to be a comforter to others who hurt. You'll be reminded that "before we can grasp any meaning from suffering we must rest in God's unfailing love." And you'll find the "joy to be discovered in the midst of suffering." Here you'll learn how hope helps troubled hearts find peace.--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Amazon.com Every year a Billy Graham crusade comes to a stadium or a television station near you, the message unchangingly passionate, though the messenger is grayer than he once was. The Reverend Billy Graham is more than just another television evangelist; he is as much a part of this country's collective consciousness as F.D.R. or the Vietnam War. Whether you subscribe to Graham's brand of ecumenical evangelism or not, Just As I Am reveals the man behind the crusade to be forthright, deeply religious, and driven to spread the Word at all costs, even his relationships with his family. Graham is characteristically honest about his failings as a husband and father, admitting that he didn't recognize his own children at a family gathering. In Just As I Am Graham discusses the beginnings of his career, his struggle to subsume intellect to faith, and, of course, the many famous--and infamous--people he has met over the years, everyone from the Shah of Iran to the Queen Mother to mobster Mickey Cohen. Graham's ministry has extended his influence to many quarters of the world, a fact that should make his autobiography interesting reading for believers and non-believers alike. From Library Journal In this memoir, Graham looks back at age 78 on his lifetime of personal relationships, ministry, leadership, and experiences. He chronicles such events and stories as his boyhood in North Carolina, his first steps in ministry, details of evangelistic trips and revivals, and meetings with world and local leaders. There are 35 pages of photos, four pages outlining all his crusades from 1947 to 1996, a list of all his books, and a 15-page index of names and places. Graham concludes his memoir with a look at the lessons he has learned in the course of his work. His honesty in describing the toll that his travels placed on his family and his ready willingness to credit the many who added to his journey make this both a heartwarming and memorable reflection. All libraries would do well to stock this readable title by an important national figure.?Leroy Hommerding, Citrus Cty. Lib. System, Beverly Hills, Fla. Amazon.com Apollyon: The Destroyer Is Unleashed, by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins, is another suspenseful chronicle of those left behind after the rapture of the saved. As the book opens, Hattie Durham, the former airline attendant and mistress of the antichrist, Nicolae Carpathia, is wracked with confusion about what to do with her illegitimate child, whose birth date is coming due. Rayford Steele, the airline pilot who flies Carpathia's plane, is ambivalent about the mounting evidence that his late wife, Amanda, may have been a false believer. Buck, the ace newspaper reporter, and Chloe, his wife, are debating whether to have a child when the future of the world is so uncertain. And all of the world's thousands of believers are gathering in Jerusalem for a stadium rally, which will lead to a showdown with Nicolae Carpathia. Believers are increasingly relying on the Internet for underground communication, and most of them are becoming more and more tempted by violence as a way of battling the forces of evil overtaking the world. But demon locusts are shortly dispatched as a divine plague to attack those who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads; this buys the believers a little bit of time to solve their respective personal crises, all of which end in ways that will keep you riveted until the last page.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition. Amazon.com The village of Mitford is soothing tonic for a readership that feels starved for community and yearns for clear morals. The recently married Father Tim and his plain-folk neighbors live the best of Christianity in everyday life. Even the rampant gossip in Mitford is the good kind: folks worrying about other folks and everyone minding one another's business out of concern rather than malice. As a result, no one faces a crisis alone. Often the crises are cause for a belly laugh, such as the rectory's new computer system that seems programmed to torment. But just as often the crises have the bite of real-life problems, such as the bloody young girl in shredded clothes, whom Father Tim finds after she was beaten by her drunken father, and the soul-wrenching despair Father Tim feels when he loses a surrogate mother. The heavily quoted scripture gives a day-to-day context for biblical teachings as well as spiritual solace during the sadder days at Mitford. --Gail Hudson From Publishers Weekly This third in the Mitford series (At Home in Mitford?a 1996 ABBY Book of the Year finalist?and Light in the Window) is another sympathetic portrayal of small-town Southern life with just enough drama to carry the plot and gracefully developed portraits of endearing characters. Allusions to past events and cameos by peripheral characters will delight the fan but may frustrate the reader new to Karon's work. Mitford is a Southeastern mountain town where everyone turns out for benefactress Sadie Baxter's birthday, where the police chief gives copies of Southern Living to inmates?and where social trouble brews in a hillbilly enclave across the creek. Episcopal minister Timothy Kavanagh of Lord's Chapel is the pivotal character. A lifelong bachelor adjusting to marriage for the first time at 63, he has no perspective on his faith and future until he and his new wife, Cynthia, are lost?and found?in a cave on a youth-group camping trip. Most compelling in Timothy's affectionately drawn flock are the young people. Thirteen-year-old Dooley Barlowe was abandoned at the rectory and now struggles to adjust to Timothy's Pygmalion efforts; Lacey Turner, also 13, is saved from her father's abuse as much by Timothy as by social services. Like glass chips tumbling in a kaleidoscope, the people at Mitford fall neatly into place at story's end, having provided a cozy and satisfying read. Author tour. From Publishers Weekly Billed as the Painter of Light, Kinkade claims to be "the most collected living artist" and the heir apparent to Norman Rockwell. This sugarcoated modern fairy tale reflects the pastel-tinted idealism of Kinkade's paintings and is clearly intended to extol the power of prayer as put forth by Protestant Christian doctrines. Taking temporary leave of her Boston bank job, 32-year-old Jessica Warwick returns home to the idyllic nearby village of Cape Light to help her older sister, Emily, the town's mayor, care for their domineering mother, who has suffered a stroke. Thinking of her budding romance with sophisticated Paul Copperfield, an older career-oriented man, Jessica is counting the days until her mother recovers sufficiently so she can leave this prosaic, Bible-thumping town and return to her job in the city. Outside of the church, the quotidian life of the community centers around the Clam Box, a local eatery operated by Charlie and Lucy Bates. Charlie, a vocal critic of Emily's leadership, is mounting a campaign to oppose her in the upcoming election. Unbeknownst to Emily, Sara Franklin, the college girl waiting tables at the Clam Box, is the daughter she gave up for adoption two decades ago, following her husband's tragic death. Meanwhile, Jessica finds herself falling for Sam Morgan, the town's jack-of-all-trades. As Jessica's growing attraction to churchgoing Sam conflicts with her career-oriented dreams, the plot sags under a surfeit of trite, blatantly proselytizing Christian subplots and syrupy sentimentality. (Mar.)Forecast: With his chain of galleries across the nation, Kinkade has recourse to built-in channels of marketing and distribution, so expect healthy sales. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc. From Booklist It's rare that someone can move easily from one medium to another, and popular "painter of light" and devout Christian Kinkade is no exception, in spite of receiving help from coauthor Spencer. Things get off to a rough start as dozens of Cape Light residents are introduced in the first chapter, making it difficult to distinguish the main from the secondary characters, but eventually Jessica and Sam emerge as central figures. Career-minded Jessica has temporarily returned from Boston to Cape Light to nurse her mother back to health. She soon meets Sam, the town handyman, and despite their differences, they fall in love. Jessica admires Sam for his small-town values, which include helping friends in need and attending church regularly, but can she give up her dream of a cultured, big-city life? It takes a big storm and some serious prayer to help them find the answer. As intriguing as their predicament is, Cape Light falls flat due in part to the fact that the authors take pains to introduce secondary characters and their conflicts but never resolve them (Is a sequel planned?), and mainstream readers may be put off by the surfeit of heavy-handed religious references. The Kinkade painting on the cover will attract his many fans, but it's likely that the content will disappoint. Megan Kalan Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

ABOUT THE BOOK The Act of Marriage: The Beauty of Sexual Love FROM THE PUBLISHER Yes, lovemaking does change after 40, but it is still the most thrilling experience two married people of the opposite sex can experience on this earth! In this practical, fun-to-read, illustrated guidebook, Tim and Beverly LaHaye cover a broad spectrum of key topics and show married couples how to experience a more satisfying and joy-filled sex life long after age 40. Millions of married couples have questions about sexual intimacy. Yet all too often, their questions go unasked . . . or unanswered. This easy-reading, medically sound book candidly addresses issues of intimacy. Does sexual desire actually reverse with aging? How does menopause affect a woman's sex drive? How can exercise and nutritional supplements improve our sex life? Is there such a thing as male menopause? What can we do to put more spark into our lovemaking? You'll learn about sexual desire and dysfunction. Understand the risk and temptation of extramarital affairs. Gain a better understanding of menopause and the dangers of breast and prostate cancer. Learn how to prepare for, and adjust to, physical changes affecting lovemaking. You and your spouse can rekindle that sexual spark in your marriage--or build even stronger intimacy and commitment. Author Biography: Tim LaHaye, D.Min., Litt.D., is a noted author, minister, educator, and nationally recognized speaker on Bible prophecy. He is president of Tim LaHaye Ministries and founder of the Pre Trib Research Center. He has written over forty books, including The Act of Marriage and The Act of Marriage After 40 (both with Beverly LaHaye), How to Win Over Depression, Spirit-Controlled Temperament, and the best-selling Left Behind fictionseries (with Jerry B. Jenkins). Tim and his wife, Beverly, live in Southern California. Beverly LaHaye is the best-selling author of (with Terri Blackstock) Seasons Under Heaven, Showers in Season, and Times and Seasons, and of (with her husband, Tim) The Act of Marriage. She is the founder and chairwoman of Concerned Women for America and shares a daily devotional commentary on the nationally syndicated radio show Concerned Women Today. She and her husband live in southern California. Mike Yorkey, with thirty books to his credit, is a long-suffering San Diego Padres fan living in Encinitas, California. FROM THE CRITICS Publishers Weekly Stress, aging and illness can contribute to a flagging sexual relationship for men and women after age 40. But the LaHayes, whose 1976 2.5-million-copy bestseller, The Act of Marriage, made it more permissible for evangelical Christians to discuss sex openly, say that combining the correct frame of mind with a few basic techniques can make the middle to golden years the richest and most sexually fulfilling. The husband-and-wife team (writing with Mike Yorkey, former editor of Focus on the Family magazine) cover the spectrum of sex and aging by discussing both male and female menopause, fluctuations in sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, breast and prostate cancer, common temptations and the importance of maintaining good health to enhance peak sexual performance. They offer practical tips and suggestions for the bedroom, demonstrating how spirituality affects sexual intimacy. Specifically, the authors advise couples to work on cultivating a warm relationship before entering the bedroom. They should take time to make thoughtful physical preparations and choose surroundings that are comfortable for both partners. Foreplay should offer a gentle touch, and intercourse involves finding those positions most conducive to mutual pleasure. The authors include a fascinating survey of approximately 800 men and women who answered 71 questions on their sexual history, satisfaction and habits. Each chapter is worthy of thoughtful, careful reading, offering hope to "over-40" married Christian couples. (Oct.) Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information. Amazon.com The success of Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye's fast-paced apocalyptic Left Behind thrillers is built on a straightforward Christian message and a blend of dialogue and action; the 10th installment of the series, The Remnant: On the Brink of Armageddon, sticks to the same proven formula that has captivated legions of fans. It's one month into the Great Tribulation, and a million people gather in the ancient city of Petra to await the foretold "Glorious Appearing." The Global Community loses no time in bombing the city, which is completely engulfed in flames, guaranteeing certain doom for those assembled unless a miracle occurs. In other parts of the world, martyrdom continues for the remnant of believers as Global Community potentate Nicolae Carpathia's thirst for blood escalates. There are lots of slick escapes, plenty of intrigue, some genuinely gory moments, and enough gruesome plagues straight out of the biblical Book of Revelation to keep readers turning the pages. When the Chicago believers are forced to scatter and discord breaks out among those gathered at Petra, changes accelerate for the Tribulation Force and other series characters, leaving an ample number of loose ends to be picked up in the next episode. --Cindy Crosby

From AudioFile Narrator Steve Sever professionally manipulates his voice to cover a large cast of characters as they converge to become part of the battle of Armageddon, and the end of time as the world perceives it. He grips the listener while unfolding the final outcome for the beloved characters who comprise the Tribulation Force in this battle between Good and Evil. The pace is fast as the plot marches toward the "great and terrible day of the Lord." Although an abridgment, the story flows smoothly and leaves no question unanswered. Music clearly defines side breaks and marks important scenes. The epilogue is informative as the Left Behind series reaches its end. Book Description The scattered Tribulation Force is drawn inexorably toward the Middle East, as are all the armies of the world, when human history culminates in the battle of the ages. During the last year of the Great Tribulation, safe houses are no longer safe, and the cast of characters dramatically changes. By the time of the war of the great day of God the Almighty, the globe has become a powder keg of danger. Except those already in Petra, everyone has been forced to relocate as Antichrist ratchets up the pressure in the world's most treacherous game. Who will be left standing when the battle leaves the Tribulation Force on the brink of the end of time and the Glorious Appearing?

Amazon.com Is it right to kill Satan's hit man? Would it help God's work? This installment in the Left Behind series picks up with Rayford Steele--"believer" and international fugitive--as he struggles with a plan to assassinate Antichrist Nicolae Carpathia. Meanwhile, Carpathia has been busy rebuilding roads, airports, and a cellular/solar satellite phone system--all designed to help him become supreme ruler of the world--and even claim himself to be God. We also find ace reporter Buck Williams anonymously preaching to the masses of believers and converts through his cyberspace magazine The Truth. All the believers in the safe house, including Buck, Doc, Chloe, and Tsion, are suspicious of Hattie--former mistress of Carpathia--who claims to be a believer but may have already compromised their secret location when she tried to buy her way to Europe months before. Fans of the series won't be disappointed. Jenkins's signature writing is at full force. Readers can count on a suspenseful plot, imaginative futuristic thinking, and familiar characters, all of which appear in the opening pages and are sustained until the last cliffhanger scene when God unleashes another earth-shattering disaster.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition. From Library Journal In the continuing struggle after the Rapture, Rayford Steele and Buck Williams plan to dethrone Nicolae Carpathia and expose him as the Antichrist. LaHaye and Jenkins (Apollyon) build up a plot reminiscent of "Who Shot J.R.?" and leave us hanging after the assassination of Nicolae. Who did it, is he really dead, and when is the next book coming out? As the millennium approaches, so does interest in this series, so don't be "left behind." From Publishers Weekly Jesus returns at last in this 12th novel in the phenomenally popular Left Behind series, vanquishing his foes and ushering in a new millennium of peace and righteousness. Ray Steele is the only member of the original Tribulation Force alive to see it, however, since Buck Williams endures a bloody death in the opening pages. The novel's pacing suffers greatly from its own foregone conclusion. Antichrist Nicolae Carpathia, once a fearsome and suave foe, is reduced to shrill hysteria in this installment, and seems more of a cartoon character than a credible instrument of Satan. And the final wars (there are four of them in quick succession) add no drama to the plot, since believers are by that point impervious to harm; neither the bullets from the Unity army or the supernatural lightning raining down from the sky can touch the Christian holdouts. It must have been difficult to imagine the words that Jesus would speak on such an occasion, but the authors' cautious solution-to draw almost solely on the statements spoken by or about Jesus in the New Testament-feels wooden. However, the book is not devoid of humor, and fans of the series will enjoy the gentle, affectionate camaraderie that exists among the excited members of the ragtag brigade of believers. For readers who have stuck with this soap opera through thick and thin, there is a real emotional payoff in seeing the characters' reunions with their loved ones who died during the Tribulation. Amazon.com Piloting his 747, Rayford Steele is musing about his wife Irene's irritating religiosity and contemplating the charms of his "drop-dead gorgeous" flight attendant, Hattie. First Irene was into Amway, then Tupperware, and now it's the Rapture of the Saints--the scary last story in the Bible in which Christians are swept to heaven and unbelievers are left behind to endure the Antichrist's Tribulation. Steele believes he'll put the plane on autopilot and go visit Hattie. But Hattie's in a panic: some of the passengers have disappeared! The Rapture has happened, abruptly driverless cars are crashing all over, and the slick, sinister Romanian Nicolae Carpathia plans to use the UN to establish one world government and religion. Resembling "a young Robert Redford" and silver-tongued in nine languages, Carpathia is named People's "Sexiest Man Alive." (This reviewer, a former People writer, finds this plot twist plausible.) Meanwhile, Steele teams up with Buck Williams, a buck-the-system newshound, to form the Tribulation Force, an underground of left-behind penitents battling the Antichrist. Ex-presidential candidate Pat Robertson briefly outsold Michael Crichton with his apocalypse novel The End of the Age (now available on audiocassette), and the similar The Third Millennium sells well, but the Left Behind series is the absolute champion in the race to make the Book of Revelation into racy thriller reading. --Tim Appelo From Library Journal On a flight from Chicago to London, several passengers aboard Capt. Rayford Steele's plane suddenly and mysteriously disappear. When Steele radios to London to report the situation, he discovers that the incident on his plane is not an isolated phenomenon but a worldwide occurrence. As Steele begins his search for answers, he learns that the Christ has come to take the faithful with Him in preparation for the coming apocalyptic battle between good and evil and that those who have been left behind must face seven dark and chaotic years in which they must decide to join the forces of Christ or the forces of Anti-Christ. Jenkins, writer-in-residence at Moody Press, and LaHaye (A Nation Without a Conscience, Tyndale, 1994) have written a gripping thriller that captures the anxiety and fear that interpretations of Revelation often inspire. Amazon.com Antichrist. The very word send shivers through us. And Nicolae Carpathia certainly does not disappoint as Antichrist. Nicolae is the third book in Left Behind series written by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, and is preceded by book one, Left Behind, and book two, Tribulation Force. Nicolae Carpathia becomes the focus as he continues to consolidate his power, unifying political states ("Global Community"), media ("Global Community Network," "Global Weekly"), and religions ("Enigma Babylon One World Faith") under a Nicolae-appointed supreme pontiff. Nicolae himself is grand potentate of the global community. Our heroes, pilot Rayford Steele and journalist Buck Williams, along with the rest of the Tribulation Force, continue their struggle to survive and protect their families in the midst of global war and destruction. They have come to recognize Nicolae Carpathia to be the Antichrist prophesied in the Bible, and to them it comes as no great revelation that this man, who presented himself as a charming and benevolent leader, has been unmasked as a ruthless and cruel tyrant, manipulating people and events to serve his own ends. And his ends are undoubtedly evil. It becomes apparent that the chaos and turmoil created by Nicolae are the fulfillment of John's prophesy of the seven seals as recorded in the book of Revelation. And it becomes also apparent they are now facing the sixth seal, a great earthquake which is sometimes called "the wrath of the lamb." This upheaval of the earth, with its accompanying death and destruction, is familiar apocalyptic imagery: a blood-red moon, a sun turned black, and the stars falling from the sky. And the Tribulation Force discovers that these incredible descriptions turn out to be not so very far from the truth. Who survives? How? What does Nicolae have in mind for the world? Readers of the first two books should not be disappointed with this third installment to this chilling tale. From AudioFile Tom Swift meets Norman Vincent Peale. In the third installment of a quasi-religious fantasy/adventure, a team of modern true believers battles Nicolae Carpathia (as in the Carpathian Mountains, Dracula's bailiwick, get it?), whom they believe to embody the Antichrist. Here, Armaggedon draws nigh as Carpathia sets off WWIII. Richard Ferrone throws himself into the melodrama with an appropriately childlike ingenuousness. He reminds one of a Boy Scout telling his pals a thrilling tale before the camp fire. Amazon.com Having survived the wrath of the Lamb--a global earthquake in the 21st month of the Tribulation--pilot Rayford Steele and reporter Buck Williams now embark on a journey of absorbing adventure and Christian triumph. Soul Harvest is book four in the enormously popular Left Behind series (seven books are planned in all), based on those who are left behind in the Rapture. Written with the same gripping pace of Tom Clancy and John Grisham (film rights have already been sold for the first two books), the authors take us to Iraq, America, underground shelters, and the bottom of the Tigris river as Steele and Williams search for loved ones. Meanwhile, biblical prophecies are fulfilled at every turn, including the great soul harvest. For many Christian followers, this series has become a tangible and thrilling testament to the Book of Revelations. --Gail Hudson --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. From Library Journal The fourth book in the "Left Behind" series (Nicolae, Tyndale, 1997) brings back Rayford Steele and Buck Williams, staunch members of the Tribulation Force, an evangelical group fighting evil Nicolae Carpathia. An earthquake has left both men searching for their loved ones while they attempt to bring about Nicolae's downfall. Readers of the earlier books should be thrilled at the return of their heroes, and the action and intrigue here certainly matches that in the rest of the series. Characterization, especially of the female characters, is thin, but that shouldn't dull fans' demand. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Amazon.com The Antichrist is dead... or is he? The city of Chicago lies in ruins, the safe house is blown, and the Global Community police are hot on the heels of the Tribulation Force. And who assassinated Nicolae Carpathia? It's a formidable challenge to keep the attention of an audience midway through a projected 12-volume series, but with their trademark blend of humor and gripping suspense, authors Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye continue to captivate readers with The Indwelling, the seventh installment of the Left Behind series. Carpathia's funeral takes a hair-raising turn for the 4 million people who attend. Over the crowd looms the centerpiece of a new world religion, a 24-foot bronze statue of Carpathia, belching black smoke and demanding obedience. Woven through the fast-paced drama are the ongoing stories of people struggling amid the end-times mayhem: Chloe Williams wrestles with the moral implications of killing her toddler Kenny to avoid having him fall into enemy hands; her father Rayford Steele is brought face-to-face with the consequences of his pride. Dr. Chaim Rosenzweig, a prominent Jewish Israeli statesman, ponders a conversion to Christianity. The strength of the series comes from Jenkins's ability to keep the action moving and readers caring about the characters. And there's a hook: The end of The Indwelling promises, "If the last three and a half years are your idea of tribulation, wait until you endure the Great Tribulation." The bad news is just beginning. But, the Tribulation Force believes, good news is also on the way. --Cindy Crosby--This text refers to the Hardcover edition. Book Description Nicolae Carpathia is dead. But who killed the Antichrist? The answer may surprise you. Book seven in the best-selling Left Behind series marks the beginning of the second half of the seven-year Tribulation period. In dramatic fashion, readers are exposed to the horrors of God's judgment and the hope of salvation. Rayford, Buck, Chloe, and the rest of the Tribulation Force find themselves at the center of heart-stopping action. Number one on the New York Times Best Sellers List for four weeks.

Amazon.com It's the dawn of the Great Tribulation, "the bloodiest season in the history of the world." After lying in state for three days, Nicolae Carpathia has risen from the dead. As the world responds in awe, statues of the potentate and "god" are erected in every major city, and a new religion, "Carpathianism," is in full swing. Followers of the antichrist are branded with a loyalty mark on their right hands or their foreheads, and "vaccinated" with a biochip embedded with personal information. Those who refuse the mark take a one-way trip to the guillotine. The second coming of Christ is only three-and-one-half years away. But can the Tribulation Force hang on? "The God who calls you to the ultimate sacrifice will also give you the power to endure it. No one can receive the mark of the beast by accident. It is a once-and-for-all decision that will forever condemn you to eternity without God," writes Tsion Ben-Judah in his daily newsletter with its cyberaudience of more than a billion. Heavenly power may be the only hope for the Tribulation Force, as it struggles to survive amidst new terrors, the death of more loved ones, and some unexpected twists in its plans. The Mark: The Beast Rules the World is the eighth installment in the blockbuster Left Behind series. Rich in dialogue, this action-packed thriller delivers the same consistent mix of apocalyptic mayhem and quirky humor readers have come to expect from the pen of Jerry Jenkins and the prophetic interpretations of Tim LaHaye. --Cindy Crosby--This text refers to the Hardcover edition. From Publishers Weekly In this eighth installment of the bestselling Left Behind series, Satan has taken full possession of Antichrist Nicolae Carpathia, who demands that all Global Community citizens bow to him in worship and take his mark on their foreheads or right hands. This spells trouble for the members of the Tribulation Force, who have pledged their unswerving allegiance to Christ. Without the mark of the beast, they face torturous persecution and death; several of their associates have become martyrs. Hiding in a bombed-out (but still posh and technologically enviable) Chicago office building, they depend upon a network of other Christians for food and supplies. The believers' public enemy status doesn't prevent the swashbuckling men among them from performing their usual task of rescuing helpless female believers. Armed only with phony IDs and Bond-like cell phones, they whisk around the world preaching how the Book of Revelation predicted every calamity that has befallen the planet. There are some worthwhile moments here, but the authors" lazy exposition leads to scenes that don't ring true. When a Christian woman is killed by a supernatural lightning bolt and her fianc mourns that "no lightning bolt... could extinguish a love so pure," the sentiment falls flat; their love story has only been told, never shown, and the doomed woman"s character remains undeveloped. Fans who have thrilled to the series' repeated car chases, airplane runway escapes and glitzy technology will find more of the same. Others will earnestly pray for the hastening of the Glorious Appearing, which will bring the series to a close. (Nov. 14) Forecast: Tyndale's phenomenal success with The Indwelling, which debuted at the #1 spot on PW's hardcover fiction bestseller list on June 5, likely will be repeated with The Mark, although sales for the former benefited from a "whodunit" mystery that has no parallel in the new novel. Tyndale has planned a 2.5 million first printing. Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Publishers Weekly It's a family reunion of sorts in Lewis's newest offering, a story collection in three parts to update her devotees on the progress of the Amish and "fancy Englischer" characters in her previous novels, all held together by the common thread of their Pennsylvania Dutch country setting. "Hickory Hollow" describes Katie and Daniel's wedded bliss (The Heritage of Lancaster County series) and Katie's overtures toward her family and church friends, who have shunned her. We find the characters from The Postcard, Rachel and her husband, Philip (a former "fancy Englischer"), settled into family life in Bird-in-Hand. Philip struggles to gain acceptance from his Amish peers as he helps to fight a fire and tries his hand at a barn raising. In "Grasshopper," we are brought up to speed on Lydia's courtship by Levi (from The Redemption of Sarah Cain). Although the book is touted as "perfect for Lewis fans and new readers," it would be a tough introduction for someone unfamiliar with her work. The dialect "wonderful-gut," "redding," "perty" and "jah" can make the reading as slow as molasses for the uninitiated. One wonders why each of these vignettes wasn't a full-fledged sequel; it feels a bit like Lewis threw three unfinished novels into one book. But Lewis fans will be pleased to find the same consistent writing they've come to enjoy, and to catch glimpses of how their favorite characters are faring. (Oct.)Forecast: Although many critics find Lewis's Amish-themed novels as overly sweet as shoofly pie, her fans are loyal and legion. More than three million copies of her books are now in print. Her followers will enjoy this, jah. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Library Journal Lewis returns to Lancaster County with a collection of short stories that revisit characters from The Shunning, The Postcard, and other titles in the "Lancaster County Books" series. As she catches readers up on the lives of Katie and Dan, Bishop John and Mary, Rachel and Philip, Sarah Cain, and many more, Lewis shows the diversity of Christian beliefs in this community and the effect that choosing to follow God has had on the families divided by different beliefs. These vignettes of the Amish and the English (as the Amish call the non-Amish) will find a welcome home in all collections with a strong Lewis readership. From Publishers Weekly Sarah Cain is happyAwith her urban townhouse, her BMW, her success as a real estate broker in Portland, Ore. Her days are brimming over with e-mail, phone calls, appointments and closings, and that's just the way she likes it. The best thing about her self-absorbed existence is that she has broken free of the shadow of her controlling older sister, Ivy, a widow who lives with her five children in an Amish community in Lancaster County, Pa. Sarah, a nonbeliever, never supported Ivy's decision to embrace the Plain People. She considers it a type of punishment to keep the children from enjoying a normal American lifestyle. But it's none of her business, at least not until she receives word that Ivy has met an untimely death, and has named Sarah as her children's guardian. At first resentful that she must travel 3,000 miles to tend to some children who are essentially strangers, Sarah discovers that she appreciates a simpler way of life. She chafes, however, under Amish scrutiny and the expectations of five grieving orphans. Sarah endeavors to remain emotionally aloof from the children while trying to make decisions about their futureAa struggle, especially since the eldest looks and acts so much like Ivy. Lewis, author of The Shunning and other books set in Lancaster County, offers sympathetic characters, an endearing setting and good pacing, though Sarah's formulaic Christian redemption is a bit sudden. (Aug.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. Book Description Her future, and the lives of her young siblings, is in the hands of a fancy "Englischer" from Portland...Sarah Cain.
